Project Details

Hello friend, I am Timothy Kimo Brien, head instigator at Create Art Podcast where we help you to tame the inner critic and create more than we consume. Every year in April National Poetry Writing Month occurs, this is a challenge to write 30 poems in 30 days and comes from the NaPoWriMo site. When you participate you are given a prompt every day for 30 days and you can choose to follow the prompt or not. Each prompt has a commentary with it and a style of poetry that you may not be familiar with. I enjoy it because it stretches my creative muscles and helps me organize my thoughts. I also really enjoy a good challenge. There is also an opportunity to read other people’s work as they post on their websites and for you to comment on their work, giving them encouragement or offering a suggestion. Care to join me on this journey?

Day 27 Prompt

In today’s (optional) prompt, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem inspired by an entry from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. The entries are very vivid – maybe too vivid! But perhaps one of the sorrows will strike a chord with you, or even get you thinking about defining an in-between, minor, haunting feeling that you have, and that does not yet have a name.

Day 27 Poem

exulansis

n. the tendency to give up trying to talk about an experience because people are unable to relate to it—whether through envy or pity or simple foreignness—which allows it to drift away from the rest of your life story, until the memory itself feels out of place, almost mythical, wandering restlessly in the fog, no longer even looking for a place to land.

When Talking = Silence

I grow weary when discussing

The event I allowed to define my life

And after so many other events

That have had a larger impact

Have piled up due to living so long

And rubbing the preverbal rabbits foot

I am still alive

 When I talk about 1 in 6

Most people don’t know what that means

Because its not a “manly”

Things like this don’t happen to men

So I talk less and less about it

As the years go on

As the distance between then and now grows

The memory doesn’t fade

It just gets clustered in with new memories

That are colored by what happened

Its like the pain one feels after a breakup

That pain eventually is replaced by the next breakup

Eventually you ask yourself why there are so many breakups

When the search comes back on the event

That colored your choices

You either learn how to color again

Or accept that you will continue to color with the wrong crayons
